PTC thermistors (with positive temperature coefficient) represent the ceramic components whose electrical resistance rapidly increases when a certain temperature is exceeded. In such a case the protection from overcurrent is provided. After failure recovery the resistance of PTC thermistors decreases, and the component recovers safety features.
Such elements are mianly produced on the base of ceramics (BaTiO3), a dielectric with electrical resistance at 10 10…10 12 Оhm·sm. When introducing additives of rare earth elements to the (BaTiO3 composition one can decrease electrical resistance up to 10…10² Оhm·sm, corresponding semiconductor elements. The possibility for searching of thermistors with determined characteristics allows to use them as protection elements in modern electronic equipment.

PTC thermistors series
PTC thermistors for overcurrent protection
During operating of power equipment the danger of overcurrent and short circuits. In order to provide the protection from high current and voltage values Epcos has produced the special series of PTC thermistors,characterising by low resistance at ambient conditions. The resistance of thermistiors strongly depends on ambient temperature. When current flowing the temperature grows, and the thermistor sharply increases resistanse providing the protection from a short circuit.

PTC thermistors produced by Epcos are widely applied in measuring systems and temperature control systems, lighting equipment, home appliance, automobile electronics, DC/DC-converters and other equipment.
